Utkal University crowned SOA Premier League champs

A hurricane 97 off 59 balls by Abhinab Ghosh helped Utkal University lift the title in the 7th SOA Premier League (SPL) All-India Inter-University T-20 Cricket Tournament, defeating hosts SOA University-A by 56 runs in the final played at the SOA University stadium yesterday.

Electing to bat, Utkal piled up a huge 212 for four in the allotted 20 overs with Ghosh blasting 13 fours and five sixes in his sizzling knock. He was adjudged the player of the final. SOA did make a spirited effort to reach the target with Siddharth Patnaik hitting an explosive 75 off 35 balls, but could finish at 156 for six at the end of the 20 overs.

Off-spinner Mazhar Ahmed was adjudged the player of the tournament and also the best bowler while Pratik Das (Utkal), who also plays Ranji Trophy for Odisha, was chosen the best batsman. Biswajeet Mohapatra (SOA-A) and Gyanjyoti Rai (Utkal) were chosen the best fielder and best wicket keeper of the tournament respectively.

Odisha Ranji Trophy medium pacer Basant Mohanty was the chief guest on the occasion and handed over the prizes. SOA University Dean (Students Welfare) Prof Sankarsan Nanda, Associate Dean of Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER) Dr Raj Kumar Hota and Asssociate Dean (Students Welfare) Dr Jyoti Ranjan Das were present.

In the semifinals, Utkal defeated defending champions Ravenshaw University by 53 runs, while SOA University-A prevailed over SOA University-B by 7 wickets. The winners were presented the first prize of Rs 1 lakh and a trophy while the runner-up got Rs 50,000 and a trophy. The player of the tournament was presented Rs 10,000.

The tournament was organised by Sikhya O Anusandhan University (SOA) from April 2. Sixteen universities and institutions participated in this tournament, which was inaugurated by the SOA University Vice-Chancellor Prof Amit Banerjee.

Ravenshaw University 167/7 in 20 overs (Subrat 53; Santosh 2/49) beat KIIT University 104/10 in 19 overs (Subhrajit 36; Piyush 4/27) by 63 runs.
April 2 (Match No 2): IIT, Bhubaneswar 102/10 in 14 overs (Shyam 41; Akhyay 5/11) beat National Law School of India 103 for 4 in 18 overs (Sikhar 33, Deepanjan 3/22) by 6 wkts.
April 4 (Match No 3): Centurion University 91/9 in 20 overs (Parikshit 23; Prabhu 3/22) lost to Utkal University 95/1 (Om Bikash 51, Sameer 1/22) by 9 wkts.
April 4 (Match No 4): IIIT, Bhubaneswar 122/8 in 20 overs (Chandrasekhar 39; Amit 3/22) beat BPUT 89/10 (Himesh 33; Satyajit 4/22) by 33 runs.
April 5 (Match No 5): Utkal University 184/5 in 20 overs (Om Bikash 52; Abinash 2/36) beat Bhagalpur University 178/8 in 20 overs (Ayush Thakur 39; Dibyajyoti Rath 4/35) by 6 runs.
April 7 (Match No 6, SF): Utkal University 196/6 in 20 overs (Pratik Das 57; Bikash 3/15) beat Ravenshaw University 148/7 in 20 overs (Nirnimesh 58; Swayam 3/17) by 48 runs.
April 8 (Match No 7, Final): Utkal University 212/4 in 20 overs (Abhinab Ghosh 97, Dinesh Patra 2 wkts) beat SOA University-A 156/6 (Siddharth Patnaik 75) by 56 runs.
